Hi Friends,
This post is sequel of my last post, which was dedicated to all my non vegetarian friends. Last post was really long so wouldn’t able to include all things and so as result of it I have to come up with this post.
Today I would like to talk about religious aspect of being a vegetarian. We Hindu believe in PRAKRUTI (nature or quality). We have divided all the things in 3 prakriti or guna.
1. SATTVA GUN
In Hindu philosophy Sattva Gun is defined as sattva (in Sanskrit “purity", literally "existence, reality"; adjectival ' "pure", anglicized sattvic) is the most of the three gunas in Samkhya, sāttvika "pure"
One of the three qualities of nature that is related to purity of nature. It is purity, reality and truthfulness. Pure consciousness and bliss. a template of balance or equilibrium; it is one of the great gunas among rajas and tamas.
2. RAJAS GUN
Rajas is the force which promotes or upholds the activity of the other aspects of Nature (prakriti) such as one or more of the following: 1) action, 2) Change, mutation; 3) passion, excitement; 4) birth, creation, generation. If a person or thing tends to be extremely active, excitable, or passionate, that person or thing could be said to have a preponderance of rajas. It is contrasted with the quality of tamas which is the quality of inactivity, darkness, and laziness, and with sattva, which is the quality of purity, clarity, calmness and creativity. Rajas is viewed as being more positive than tamas, and less positive than sattva, except, perhaps, for one who has "transcended the gunas" and achieved equanimity in all fields of relative life.
3. TAMAS GUN
The result of a tamas-dominated life is demerit by karma: demotion to a lower life-form. Aramaic life would be marked by laziness, irresponsibility, cheating, maliciousness, insensitivity, criticizing and finding fault, frustration, aimless living, lack of logical thinking or planning, and making excuses. Tamasic activities include overeating, oversleeping and/or the consumption of drugs and alcohol and meat.
This is the most negative guna because of its rejection of Karmic law and the central principle of dharmic religions; that one's Karma must be worked out and not ignored. The gunas are defined and detailed in Samkhya, one of the six schools of classical Indian philosophy.
Each of the three gunas has its own distinctive characteristics and it is believed that everything is made up of these three. Tamas is lowest, heaviest, slowest, and most dull (for example, a stone or a lump of earth). It is devoid of the energy of the rajas and the brightness of sattva.
We have divided all our actions in 3 prakriti or guna. Whatever we do falls in one of 3 prakriti. We believe that food is primary need of human body and what we eat, we behave like that. We have one very famous quote: ANNA(food) TEVU(like) MANN(heart). Prakriti of food decides your prakriti. Tamas prakriti is most dangerous for the spiritual well being of soul.
Hinduism teaches you to upgrade yourself from Tamas to Rajas, from Rajas to Sattva. This is called positive journey of life. Your deeds should be in the manner which leads you to higher level. We also believe that food also falls in one of 3 prakritis. And meat falls under Tamas Prakriti.
We strongly believe that we have to move our lives from Tamas(darkness) to Sattva(purity) in order to create good karma or to get Moksha(equilibrium of karma).
According to Hinduism, getting birth as a Human being is very precious and this is the only Avatar(descent) by which we can try to reach Moksha. Everything leading to Tamas Prakriti is an obstacle to move you towards Sattva Prakriti.
This is the reason why Hinduism favors’ vegetarianism.
IIअसतो मा सद्गमय, तमसो मा ज्योतिर्गमयII
IIमृत्योर् मा अमृतं गमय, ॐ शांति शांति शांतिII
Asato maa sadgamaya, Tamaso maa jyotirgamaya,
Mṛityor maa amṛitan gamaya, Om shaanti shaanti shaanti.
truly spoken dimple...
